| SUBIOS 2006 Highlights |
SUBIOS 2006 was held between March 6-12, with the week’s worth of activities spread among the islands’ various hotels and dive centres, and culminating in the capital of Victoria for a grand finale of weekend activities including a carnival and float parade.
Continuing with the tradition, SUBIOS was launched at the International Conference Centre of Seychelles (ICCS) by Vice President Joseph Belmont, followed by screenings of videos and photographs for the annual SUBIOS underwater film and image competition.
That kicked off a succession of SUBIOS soiree evenings in different hotels and at dive centres, ranging from lavish seafood dinners and presentations from special guest lecturers and underwater filmmakers, to night dives ending in beach barbecues.
In the spirit of educating the next generations of Seychellois as to their country’s unique underwater heritage, children during the week were able to take advantage of free introductory dives, or display their creative talents through writing and art contests with an underwater theme.
The grand finale in
Victoria
saw a range of successful debut events for SUBIOS 2006, including the SUBIOS Man and SUBIOS Woman triathlon-style event and the La Buse Treasure Hunt, which revolved around the mysterious pirate treasure that some believe lies submerged just off the coast of the
village
of
Bel Ombre
on Mahé.
The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Ronny Jumeau, officially brought SUBIOS 2006 to a close by announcing the theme for the 2007 edition, “Our Ocean Cousins,” in honour of the many species of whale and dolphin that frequent Seychelles’ waters.
