SUBIOS 2006 to splash down in two weeks

’ annual underwater festival, is fast approaching with a full slate of activities centred around the marine environment from March 6-12.
Held under the theme “The Gardens Below,” SUBIOS 2006 will be officially opened by Vice President Joseph Belmont on Monday, March 6 at the International Conference Centre, followed by the prize giving ceremony to the SUBIOS 2005 winners of the annual video and photo contests. Entries for the 2006 photo and video competition will then be screened at ICCS for public voting.
That will signal a week of national activities to commence across the main islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, including school and public presentations from local and international guest speakers, snorkelling trips, boat rides and introductory dives for children, as well as different SUBIOS evenings organized by various dive centres and hotels each night of the week, with informative slide presentations by prominent marine experts meshed with evening soirees and barbecues on the beach.
There will also be a special La Buse ‘virtual’ treasure hunt in homage to the 18th century pirate running during the entire week, with a special prize sponsored by Diamond SA to the individual that can solve the final riddle.
The SUBIOS celebrations will converge on

on the weekend of March 11-12, where an open-air "
SUBIOS
Garden
" in the Children’s Playground will host most of the weekend festivities.
March 11 will see the first ever SUBIOS Man and SUBIOS Woman competition, an iron man triathlon style event that will put
Seychelles
’ best athletes to the test over four legs: swimming, running, cycling and canoeing, with the finishing line just adjacent to the playground.
On March 12 for the grand finale, the
SUBIOS
Garden
promises to give diving and underwater enthusiasts, as well as interested passers-by, the chance to enjoy diving and marine conservation displays and exhibitions, craft stalls and artists' galleries offering on-the-spot portraits and custom paintings. A rich variety of authentic
Seychelles
cuisine will also be on offer within an authentic, Seychellois atmosphere with live music and traditional dancing.
Other attractions on the March 12 finale include glass bottom boat trips for adults and children in the marine park, as well as a parade of school floats depicting the SUBIOS theme, that will wind its way from the Stad Popiler car park, around the Clock Tower and down
Independence Avenue
, then past the playground toward ICCS.
Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Ronny Jumeau will officially close SUBIOS 2006 on the evening of March 12 in the SUBIOS gardens, followed by a prize giving ceremony for the different competition winners for the various SUBIOS events.
